This Website and Tor
« on: February 07, 2019, 02:53:15 PM »
There is an ongoing issue with using Tor to browse this website,

The message is:
Sorry Guest, you are banned from using this forum!
This ban is not set to expire

This does not happen all the time. It depends on which exit node has been chosen by Tor.

IMHO, this ban is based on the IP address of the current Tor exit node (not user chosen). It has nothing to do with your personal (or corporate) internet-facing IP address.

Banning the IP address of Tor exit nodes is a bad idea since it punishes every user who happens to use Tor and Tor has chosen that particular exit node.

This issue used to be a real problem when using Tor. Fortunately, most sites (except the chronic abusing companies) have found more realistic ways of stopping abuse without globally banning everyone who happens to be using a particular Tor exit node.

I realize that I am opening myself up to a deluge of individuals who say don't use Tor. Any privacy advocate will tell you that this is unacceptable. Tor is an important part of internet privacy and security.

Looks like people do not care about your issue, maybe they are not visiting that site with Tor like me for example and I am too lazy to install it just to verify. But I am bumping this thread for others to gain more exposure to your problem and have it solved.

From which country and IP and proxy you have tried to visit it ? I have done something like that with and was never able to get past this message but for that forum all works for example and without any Tor really. See my point ?

I do not get your issue sorry, but I am visiting these website without Tor browser and all is basically fine with it if that is what you are asking to. And I am not sure who will visit it with that browser, for sure it used for some cases, but that one are not of them really.

I get the same message every month or so using Chrome - I have found that clearing your History and cookies etc will solve it and you can get logged in again easily.

If anyone has a recurring problem with this they are welcome to message me (or email) with the IP address that they think is being blocked and I can check and remove it. I don't block IP's based on any particular origin, I block IP's based on whether they have spammed the forum or not. You have to be quite proactive in spamming the forum to get an IP block - i guess at some point a spammer has used that particular IP address to do exactly that.
