The essential thing to become a professional trading in Forex is knowledge, you must keep constantly learning all the possible terms that have to do with this market, You also have to be very patient because success is not so easy to achieve, it takes a lot of time, effort and mistakes from which you must constantly learn to perform more effective operations with lower risk rates.

OTB thought he was a 'professional'  :o How do you define professional - being 'successful' for just a few years? Having 100% winning trades but excessive DD and risky strategy? balancedFX thought the same after just a few months. If you can find someone who has a 5-year+ profitable track record without taking excessive risks or using a risky strategy and living from his earnings that would sum it up for me. To get there IMO the ONLY way is to have a mentor who can guide you around all the usual pitfalls, remain focused and disciplined and keep risk low - it's all about preserving your - precious capital. If you think you have a system which works then risk no more than 0.25% per trade for the first 6 months and set realistic returns of a few per cent per month. This is a very rare example!

To my mind, trader is a professional only in case if trading is his main source of income. That is why all part-time traders are not professionals even if they are profitable for several months or even years. Trading for living is very difficult due to the high psychological pressure caused by uncertainty associated with trading. Part-time trader could stay out fo the market for relatively long period of time if current market conditions are unfavourable for his trading system. At the same time, full-time trader has to earn money to cover his daily expences. Such situation quite often leads to overtrading and losses. The only way ot deal with this is to be disciplined enough to avoid such trades and act exclusively in accordance with the strategy rules.

Professional trader has a bit different mindset: he know how to operate effectively with probabilities and how to manage risk. Trading is a routine for them, not gambling. That is why professional traders use another approach to making trading decisions because the risks they exposed to are very high. The position size they use is much bigger than average position size used by amateur trader, so they need more efficient risk management rules. When the position is huge, every minor price change could influence substancially the final result, so the systems used by professional traders are more detailed and provide rules for any possible scenario.
Another importand element of professional trading is journaling. Each professional trader has his own track of records and trading journal to be able to analyse his trades, detect the repearing mistakes and work hard to eliminate them. At the same time, amateur traders do not record their trades because they find it boring or just have no enough time to do this due to other (main) work. Actually, journalling could be one of the most important steps to trading success which is impossible without properly performed analysis.

Good question from Petersurrey. I personally define professional trader as a person who is living solely from his trades. I highly appreciate these people as I am currently working hard in order to become fully independent professional trader
